Welcome to The Daily Mariner! Let’s take a look at some recent news regarding the Seattle Mariners:

Andres Munoz Suffers Setback

The Mariners acquired Munoz from the Padres last season in the trade that sent Austin Nola to San Diego. However, Munoz underwent Tommy John Surgery last season, missing all of 2020. Andres was already expected miss the first couple months of this season, but according to manager Scott Servais, he has suffered a minor setback and has not been throwing recently. When Andres is healthy, he throws absolute heat, averaging nearly 100 MPH with his fastball as he will also top out at 103 MPH at times. I’m excited for when he does come back because I think he will be a very crucial part of the Mariners bullpen for years to come.

Mariners Show off Speed in 6–3 Win over Giants

There were a lot of good takeaways from yesterday’s victory over the Giants. First off, Taylor Trammell recorded a couple of hits out of the leadoff spot, also taking a walk and stealing a base. Next, Sam Haggerty stole two more bases, as he now leads all players with five overall steals this Spring. Lastly. Nick Margevicius did very good in four relief innings, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out six and not walking a batter.

Who will the Mariners have on their bench to start the season?

The Mariners are projected to carry 14 pitchers on their roster, with six in the rotation and eight in the bullpen. With nine players in the starting lineup, that leaves only three spots on the bench. First, here is my prediction for Seattle’s Opening Day starters:

  • C Tom Murphy
  • 1B Evan White
  • 2B Dylan Moore
  • 3B Kyle Seager
  • SS J.P. Crawford
  • LF Taylor Trammell
  • CF Kyle Lewis
  • RF Mitch Haniger
  • DH Ty France

There is no doubt that Luis Torrens is going to be on Seattle’s bench as their backup catcher, although he may split time with Murphy behind the plate. The next player that I predict will be on the Mariners bench is Sam Haggerty. Haggerty is a switch-hitter, has good speed, and can play anywhere. Sam has a ton of value and would be a perfect guy to have on the bench. Lastly, I think Jose Marmolejos will take the final spot on the bench. He can play both corner outfield positions along with a little bit of first base. Hitting wise, he has some great power, but needs to make contact more consistently.

Other Options for the Bench: Shed Long, Donnie Walton, Jake Fraley, Braden Bishop
